How Early Reading Can Create Genius Children

Teaching your kids to read especially at an early age is an excellent thing to do. It will help your child to increase their vocabulary, their comprehension skills and their overall knowledge. How To Make Kids Smarter By Encouraging Them To Read Books

Hayes and Ahrens conducted research into this area and found that a number of children’s books contained words that were rare when compared to what they hear on television when watching children’s programs. They also compared the words in children’s books to adult conversation and found that the books contained three times as many rare words. So, if you want to raise a brighter child then encourage them to read good children’s books.

In another study by Stanovich and Cunningham they examined three measures of Grade 1 reading and word recognition, comprehension and word decoding and found that all of these measures were a good predictor of reading ability in the 11^th Grade.

This meant that early reading was vital when it came to predicting the literary experience of a child in their lifetime and proved that it was the answer to raising an intelligent child. The study also demonstrated that if a child learned to read early, they would generally read more throughout their lifetime.

Children who engage in reading also enhance their overall verbal intelligence as well. While it can be said that not every smart mind is a result of early reading it is certainly a prevailing theme for raising an intelligent child. Below you will see a list of famous people who learned to read early and benefited from this.

Samuel Johnson (1709 – 1784)

A famous English author, Samuel Johnson started reading at the age of 2. He was known as the “most distinguished man of letters in English history”. Johnson published his own Dictionary of the English Language in 1755 and this work was regarded as “one of the greatest single achievements of scholarship”.

Jonathan Swift  (1667 – 1745)

Jonathan Swift was a famous poet and writer who also learned to read when he was 2 years old. His most famous works were “Gulliver’s Travels” and “A Modest Proposal” and he has also written some other well known satirical works and poems.

Voltaire (Fancois-Maire Arouet 1694 – 1778)

Voltaire was a popular historian, writer and philosopher who learned to read when he was 3 years old. He produced many excellent literary works such as essays, plays, novels, poems, historical writings and scientific writings. He was fluent in English, Spanish and Italian and also produced more than 2,000 pamphlets and books and 20,000 letters.

William James Sidis (1898 – 1944)

Sidis was a child prodigy and learned to read early. Some said that he had an IQ of between 250 and 300. He entered Harvard University at age 11 and had gained his degree by the time he was 16. He started teaching mathematics when he was 17 years old.

Francis Galton (1822 – 1911)

Galton started reading when he was 2 years of age. At the age of 4 he could read the time and do multiplication work. He is famous for producing more than 340 books and papers and was believed to be a great geographer, meteorologist, inventor, statistician, anthropologist and psychometrician.

Les Murray (1938 – )

Murray learned to read at 4 years old. He is famous for being the greatest living poet in Australia and he read the 8 volume Cassell’s Encyclopedia from his home. He has won a number of prizes which includes the T.S. Eliot Prize and has 30 volumes of poetry to his name.

Thomas Babington Macaulay (1800 – 1859)

Macaulay was a famous historian and British poet and

he learned to read at the age of 3. He was a politician who wrote a lot and he authored ballads about heroic episodes in Roman history that were very popular.

William Gates III (Bill Gates)

Most famously known as Bill Gates and the cofounder of Microsoft, he is one of the richest men on the planet. It is not certain at what age he began reading but when he was 9 he had already read the whole World Book Encyclopedia.

Patricia Highsmith (1921 – 1995)

She was an American novelist who started reading at an early age. Known all over the world for her psychological thrillers which later became film adaptations, her very first novel “Strangers On A Train” has been adapted for film a number of times. She also wrote the famous novel “The Talented Mr Ripley”.

John Enoch Powell (1912 – 1998)

Powell was a writer, poet and politician who started reading ancient Greek when he was just 5 years old. He learned 12 different languages and before he entered the world of politics he was a well known scholar and at age 25 became a professor of ancient Greek.

Turn Your Child Into A Genius

Now you have seen the list of some brilliant minds that started reading at an early age you may be wondering if these people learned to read at an early age because they were geniuses or prodigies. Certainly, there is no guarantee that learning how to read early will make your child a genius. But one thing is certain and that is your child will not require a genius mind to read at an early age. Basically, a normal child that does not have any learning disabilities can start reading at just 2 or 3 years of age.
